Stop gambling Essay Example for Free
Stop gambling Essay Today, Iââ¬â¢m going to talk about gambling. Nowadays, gambling becomes a entertainment in our life. Some people go there just for fun, but most people go there for money, they think they can make money by gambling. As we known, only very few people can make money from gambling, the winner always not belong to gamblers, so the problem comes out. Most people with gambling problems say they lost control over how much time and money they spend on gambling. Meanwhile, they ignored other responsibilities. They knew they had problems, but only gambling seemed important. Many people who gamble overly have mixed feelings about gambling. They know they are causing problems for the people they love. They may become anxious and unhappy, and often hate themselves. They feel they canââ¬â¢t give up on all the time, money and emotion they have put into gambling. They canââ¬â¢t accept that they will never win the money back what they have lost. Some people still believe their system will pay off, their luck will change or they are due to win. Others believe continue to gamble is the only way to get the money back. Eventually they will lose their money, family, even life. Also, it will make some serious consequences, like suicide, crime, and destructive behaviors. Other people promise to quit, but it is not easy. If they quit now, they will feel like a loser. They will have to face all the problems that gambling has caused. But, only to stop gambling can help them to start a new life. So here are some solutions to help people to quit the gambling. 1 Make a decision on a given day when you wake up that you will not gamble. Decide that for this one day you will not gamble. If you have to do it an hour at a time, it is okay. Sometimes you may have to do it in a minute at a time. it is okay, as you promise yourself in a given moment that you will not gamble. Schedule your day in a very structured way so you do not have a lot of free time. This can really help a lot, as you will have no time to gamble. 2. Find something at that time to replace your gambling. One of the way to quit gambling is to be able to find healthy replacements that will substitute for your gambling activities. Exercise, go shopping, go out with friends, or do some cooking. You can also watch a movie, or listen to some soft music or do some reading and so on. Anything, and I mean anything not go back to gamble. Your goal is to stop gambling, or begin to reduce gambling frequency. 3. Remember the feeling when you leave the casino or lost a lot of money on a bet. Think about how bad it feels when you lose a lot of money. Remember that feeling, and allow yourself to feel that feeling when you are gambling again. Sometimes these feelings can exactly imitate how you feel after a gambling. This can really stop you from going out and placing a bet. So my conclusion is gambling as a entertainment is ok for people, but if you addict to it, eventually you will get hurt. So before gambling, please ask yourself, how you going to be responsible of yourself, your family, and your future.

Iconic Images of the 1980s
Iconic Images of the 1980s Images of 1980s Speaking of 1980s often people think about Reagan, ââ¬Å"Greed is goodâ⬠, and funny hair styles. Of course the 80s were more than that, but if you asked me what I am thinking about the 1980s it would be a longest ââ¬Å"Mhmâ⬠followed by ââ¬Å"I was not even born yet.â⬠However, images can be a tool for us to study the detail of history. The greatest thing about learning history for a visual person is to look into photos. Each and every photograph has a story to tell. Ever since the technology of modern camera was introduce in the 18 century, people have been using this technique to capture memorable moments. à à Photography in the 1980s was personal and political, or a mixture of both. Nevertheless, thanks to the photographers who are there to capture events, the future generation can study them. What happened at the scene of Reaganââ¬â¢s attempted Assassination? How big was the crowed when the Berlin wall fell down at 1989? What did Chernobyl look like after the explosion? I believe those events had already been symbolized. Some say ââ¬Å"history always repeats itself.â⬠That is somehow true if we look deeper into every decades. The world still has the same problems that happened before. What is so special about the 1980s is that is a historical turning point. Through several iconic photos of the 1980s the decade can be seen as one plagued with wars, tragic events and political unrest, but it was also a decade where freedom and human rights were advanced. Afghan Girl, 1985 (See Figure 1) The Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan during 1977-1980 might been seen as a milestone of U.S. history due to the help we have been giving, but due to poor Sharbat Gula and her family it is not an event to be celebrated. In 1985, National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry shot a portrait of a 12 year-old Afghan girl named Sharbat Gula made it to the cover of National Geographic Magazine. However, what people could not see in the photo ââ¬Å"Afghan Girlâ⬠was the reason that caused Sharbat Gulaââ¬â¢s sorrow eyes. From 1979 to 1989, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan armed with Arab resistance launched a war of aggression and counter-aggression. The evening of December 27, the Soviet Union deployed eight divisions, Special Forces, and airborne troops in a brutal military invasion of Afghanistan. In only three and a half hours, they gained ââ¬Å"complete military and political control of Kabul and large portions of the countryâ⬠(Office of Historian) Until early 1980, 8.5 million troops invaded which gradually increased to 10 million people. There were almost 10 years long of ongoing civil wars, invasions and conflicts in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, little Sharbat Gula was born into this event. After the Soviet invasion of blatant military, the Afghan people in the nation in danger of life and death, the original anti-government revolutionary activity soon developed into a larger anti-Soviet war against the Soviet Union. According to the article ââ¬Å"A Life Revealed: Along Afghanistans War-torn Frontierâ⬠by Debra Denker, Sharbat Gulaââ¬â¢s village was bombed and invaded by Soviet Union around the early 80s. Unfortunately, Sharbat Gulaââ¬â¢s parents were killed by bombing, about 100 people died from war, 600 million people were forced to flee their homes and become refugees. Later, photographer Steve McCurry visited Afghanistan, and was given a ââ¬Å"war-torn frontier.â⬠tour. In one of the refugee camps, he ca ptured the hunting face of Sharbat Gula among other similar age girls. Sharbat Gulaââ¬â¢s portrait became the symbol of post war fear of the Muslim world (Denker). In 1988, under the auspices of the UN Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar, the Soviet Union, the United States, Afghanistan and Pakistan met in in Kabul and their four foreign ministers signed in Geneva a political settlement for Afghanistan. The Soviet troops had to withdraw from Afghanistan within nine months, putting an end of a nine-year occupation (Dibb). Wars and conflicts are a never ending nightmare which is still haunting us today. The look on Sharbat Gulaââ¬â¢s face fully expressed that. The Reagan Assassination Attempt, 1981 (See figure 2) Same time at the early 80s, the most serious incident which happened to President Ronald Wilson Reagan was when he got shot just outside the Washington Hilton Hotel by a young man named John Hinckley Jr. In the photo of the scene right after the shooting, reporters were making roars within the crowed, few officers holding a gun down on the sidewalk, and the president was thrown into the limo car. It was chaotic. The gunman was held immediately after the shooting. This event shocked the entire society for Reagan had only been elected to be a president for ten weeks. President Reagan was heading to the white house unaware that he had been shot. Shortly after he left the scene, he did not realize one of the ricochets punctured his lung until he started coughing up blood. He then was rushed to George Washington University Hospital. The New York Times reported President Reagan remained in good humor even he was fainted due to the blood loss. He told his doctors, ââ¬Å"Please tell me youà ¢â¬â¢re Republicansâ⬠(Raines). Fortunately, President Reagan survived after the operation, and recovered after weeks. The motive to assassinate the President surprisingly had nothing to do with political reasons, but with John Hinckleyââ¬â¢s obsession with actress Jodie Foster. This obsession was based on the movie Taxi Driver.â⬠He firmly believed that if he became famous by mimicking the plot from Taxi Driver, would be able to get Jodie Fosterââ¬â¢s attention. What happened to gunman John Hinckley afterward was 13 charged against him. However, due to his mental problem, the court sent him to St. Elizabeths Hospital for life instead of prison. The unsuccessful attempted assassination brought dramatic changes to Reagans presidency. His survival boosted a wave of public sympathy and he gained popularity. He was also the first president who survived the assassination (Brands). Although politics was not the reason why John Hinckley opened fire, it is still one of the many major political events in the 1980s. Chernobyl Accident 1986 (See Figure 3) Besides wars and political unrest, there was a major unclear accident happened at Chernobyl, Ukraine. The photo that taken by authorities right after the accident shows the explosion had destroyed the entire building to a hollow hole on the ground. What happened was that event management and technical staff decided to test the turbine in case of a sudden loss of power, the strain of the reactor. This overnight test was neither carefully planned nor authorized by superiors. On the afternoon of April 25, 1986, the unit fourth in accordance with the plan was shut down, when the operation began an experiment related to the security system. The case of this experiment is to understand the plant loses all power, but the rotating turbine has enough energy capable of supplying electric power for 45 seconds, which is the time required to start the emergency diesel generator supply. The reactor power is reduced to half of the rated output, and the emergency reactor core cooling system is turne d off. After 11:10, the staffs did not re-open the emergency cooling system, which was the first major mistake, according to a series of serious negligence operations are: the output power was reduced to one percent of rated output, much lower than the power required for the experiment; the majority of the control rods withdrawn; and the other important safety system was turned off. These operational mistakes made the unit fourth become unstable. Output had been rising rapidly, technical workers lost control of the reactor, output power rose to up to 100 times the rated output, and thus part of the fuel rods ruptures, and the heat burst a lot of things to make the cooling water evaporation, resulting in a steam explosion destroying a weight of about 1,000 tonnes of reactor cover. From May 1 to 6, due to the reactor explosion, more than 26 percent of the radiation dose was released into the outside world, 31 firefighters and two people from the plant lost their lives, most of them have been severely burned from radiation, while 209 suffered severe radiation injuries (U.S.NRC). Strictly speaking, the Chernobyl accident cannot be called a human error. It was more like a willful violation. It seemed following the scheduled timetable was seen as more important than safety. Staff were prohibited from running the operation under low power, and stopped safety device testing. It was like in travel a little faster by car, removing the brakes in the car regardless of rules or safety, and just desperately rushing forward to the destination, leading to a monstrous disaster. 25 years later today, the area outside of Chernobyl nuclear plant still reminds uninhabitable. Peopleââ¬â¢s belongings still stay in the same spots, but not a trace of life in sight. The fall of the Berlin Wall, 1989 (See figure 4) Finally, the voice of freedom is rising at the end of 1980s. After nearly three decades of separation, the Berlin Wall finally fell down on the evening of November 9, 1989. A photo taken by Associated Press captured the moment when demonstrators tore down a piece of the Berlin wall. Berlin Wall and the wall that speared North and South Korea right now is the same product after World War II. After World War II, Germany and Berlin by the Soviet Union, the United States, Britain and France divided Germany into four zones. In 1949, the Soviet Union occupied East Germany, the capital set in East Berlin. West Germany and the US and British law were established in the occupied territories. Initially people in Berlin were able to move around freely between the districts, but with the Cold War, tensions started building up. In order to prevent East Germans from fleeing to West Germany. The border began to close up. From 1949 to 1961, about 2.5 million East Germans who risked being shot by Eas t Germany fled to West Berlin. Berlin Wall started just barbed wires in August 13, 1961. It was later replaced by a large number of real fences more than 155 kilometers long, about 3 to 4 meters high (Behind The Wall). After the construction was completed, a total of more than 5000 people successfully fled to West Berlin, 3000 people were arrested, and over 400 people were killed and injured (Leslie). 25 years ago, the new East German government began to plan to relax travel restrictions for East German people, but due to a misunderstanding of the then East German Politburo on superior orders, mistakenly announced Berlin Wall is about to open, resulting in tens of thousands of people took to the streets, the demolition of the wall, the whole of Germany into a state of extreme excitement. One of the Time reporter Ken Olsen recalled the day when he was in Germany says ââ¬Å"They were screaming, Tor auf! Tor auf! Open the gate!â⬠(Rothman) Although it was not the structure of walls collapsed, it had been removed by people. People climbed the Berlin Wall, removed graffiti, and took pieces of building materials as souvenirs. 11 months later, the two Germanies finally reunited. Tank Man, 1989 (See figure 5) Just several months before the Fall of Berlin Wall, in Tiananmen Square Beijing, China, a Tank man stood in front of type 59 tanks and attempted to block their way. He was pulled away by another man lright after. This thrilling scene happened to be caught by Jeff Widener (The Associated Press) in June 5, 1989 who was inside the Plaza Hotel next to the Tiananmen Square. He hid the negatives in the toilet water tank to avoid police forcesââ¬â¢ search or the truth will not have spread around the world (Iyer). What triggered this event can be traced back to the Deng Xiaoping era. He was in power after 1979 and the implement reform and opened up policy on topic such as to industrialized, agriculture, national defense, science and technology, four modernizations. After a decade of reform, social and economic problems, such as a widening wealth gap and serious inflation; workers were dissatisfied because their salaries did not keep up with the pace of inflation, causing large flow of the rural population to the cities to make a living, leading to more homeless beggars and other social issues; official corruption, and other deep complaints. By the end of 1986, students at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei held anti-corruption protests. Then, Shanghai, Beijing and other cities have also lead to student protests, they asked the government to carry out democratic reforms. CPC (Communist Party of China) General Secretary Hu Yaobang was tough because of the absence of clearance, and he had been criticized and resigned from office in the following year the General Secretary (Lui). The spring of 1989, the international communist forces collapsed. Democratic movements began in Eastern Europe. Inspired by the movement, in late April 1989, students and Beijing residentsââ¬â¢ protests gathered in Tiananmen Square. Since then, the whole country has undergone a similar student protest movement. On June 3 in the evening, the CPC decided to send troops to suppress, to disperse the crowd in and around Tiananmen Square, the army opened fire to the masses, and even tanks shot protesters. By 4 in the morning, the army controlled Square, people were forced to evacuate. The next day, after the first night of the crackdown, Tiananmen Square was cleared. All of the students who were in the movement for several months disappeared without a trace. Everything had been wiped out. The tanks in Tiananmen traveled quickly around, declaring military force. The photo of the ââ¬Å"Tank Manâ⬠became a symbol of Tiananmen. It showed the courage of ordinary people fighting on beha lf of freedom. Unsung heroes raised up public concern of their human rights. Before then, people constantly live under fear of the iron fist. To summarize, thanks to the efforts of photographers, the future generation can see the 1980s was not only overwhelmed by national conflicts, politics, and unfortunate accidents, but was also a decade of new beginning. See how photos show the stories of the time. It is not about the photo itself such as how it was constructed, or what kind of the camera photographers used, but it is about the messages that those photos are trying to deliver. Sharbat Gula the Afghan girlââ¬â¢s frightened eyes revealed how it was when international communism was still powerful. Beloved President Reagan survived an attempted assassination, and became a god like figure in the 80s. Later, the Chernobyl Accident happened, and if there were not any photos documented, we would never know how intense it was when an unclear powerful plant melted function. At the end of the 80s, Berlin Wall fell down, and people in China stood up for freedom and human rights. Those two photos quickly became a symbol of free spirits. Visual images are so powerful that they could not only grab peopleââ¬â¢s attention, but also shout out message that words failed to present. I appreciate those brave photographers who were there at the first scene so we can look into what was going on in the past. Are we learn our lessons from history. 1980s might seem like a problematic period, but people survived to make it a better tomorrow. à à Figure 1. McCurry, Steve. Afghan Girl. Digital image. Time magazine :: essays research papers
Time magazine's June 6, 1983 cover story called stress "The Epidemic of the Eighties" and referred to it as our leading health problem; there can be little doubt that the situation has progressively worsened since then. Numerous surveys confirm that adult Americans perceive they are under much more stress than a decade or two ago. A 1996 Prevention magazine survey found that almost 75% feel they have "great stress" one day a week with one out of three indicating they feel this way more than twice a week. In the same 1983 survey only 55% said they felt under great stress on a weekly basis. It has been estimated that 75 - 90 percent of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress related problems. Job Stress is far and away the leading source of stress for adults but stress levels have also escalated in children, teenagers, college students and the elderly for other reasons, including: increased crime, violence and other threats to personal safety; pernicio us peer pressures that lead to substance abuse and other unhealthy life style habits; social isolation and loneliness; the erosion of family and religious values and ties; the loss of other strong sources of social support that are powerful stress busters. http://www.stress.org/problem.htm Israel's health problems are similar to those prevailing in the Western world. Since heart diseases and cancer account for about two thirds of deaths, the study of these illnesses has become a national priority. Also of great concern are medical care for the aging, problems arising from environmental changes and conditions emanating from current lifestyles, as well as traffic and occupational accidents. Health education programs are widely used to inform the public of the need to stop habits such as smoking and overeating, as well as lack of physical exercise, which have proved detrimental to health. Campaigns are also run frequently to increase workers' and drivers' awareness of potential dangers. Environmental Hazards Environmental and health hazards have been generated by rapid population growth and steady expansion of agricultural and industrial activities. More than 70 percent of Israel's industry is concentrated along the narrow coastal zone where meteorological conditions are unfavorable for the dispersal of pollutants. To combat pollution of the Mediterranean and Red Sea coastlines, Israel has adopted a multifaceted program of legislation, enforcement, beach and shore clean-up and international activities, primarily within the framework of the Mediterranean Action Plan. Under conditions of water scarcity and intensive development, the degradation of water quality constitutes a critical problem.

A Line in the Sand - Original Writing :: Papers
A Line in the Sand - Original Writing A line. A simple, one-dimensional mark. It may be the edge of a square, the shortest distance between two points, or markings on the road. Lines, gentlemen, are boring yet useful tools in life. Right? Wrong! There is one line I would like to tell you about. If you were seen stepping over this line, it would result in your death on the spot, no questions asked. This is a line drawn in the sand. This line has caused the largest population movement ever witnessed by humankind. Upon construction of this line, 3.5 million people had to move from one side and 5 million from the other. There are estimates that more that 20 million people were left homeless after the construction of this line. Who said lines were boring, not me! However, it runs deeper than that. Not only did people have to move, more than one million people were butchered on the construction of this line. The positioning of this line has been the cause of three wars: three bloody brutal wars. Now can I ask you, who in the right mind would make such a line as this? They would have to be mighty inhuman to draw a line that would kill a million people. But in the end, all they had done, was to draw a line in the sand, just a line in sandâ⬠¦nothing more, nothing less So where do you think this line is? Between Israel and Palestineâ⬠¦no Between North and South Koreaâ⬠¦no. Between the former north and South Vietnam,â⬠¦wrong again. The line, gentlemen was drawn in the state of Punjab, in 1947, in what was then undivided British India. The line created and separated Pakistan from India. Ancient India, which gave us modern numbering system, which gave us steel, which gave us surgery, was destroyed by a line in the sand. Culture and civilisations spanning thousands of years were split apart by a line in the sand. A country was shatteredâ⬠¦.shattered by a line in the sand. Fifty-five years on and the trade of insults from leader to leader

The Psychological Dimension of Nathaniel Hawthorneââ¬â¢s The Birthmark Essa
The Psychological Dimension of ââ¬Å"The Birthmarkâ⬠à à à à à à à à à à à à This essay will analyze Nathaniel Hawthorneââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Birthmarkâ⬠in order to demonstrate that it is a ââ¬Å"psychologicalâ⬠short story both in its themes and in its emphasis on the moral-psychological aspect of the main characters. There is probably unanimity among literary critics that Hawthorne is a ââ¬Å"psychologicalâ⬠writer. Consider some of their statements chosen at random from various critiques of Hawthorneââ¬â¢s literary works: Stanley T. Williams in ââ¬Å"Hawthorneââ¬â¢s Puritan Mindâ⬠says: What he wrote of New England was . . . .the subconscious mind of New England. It was. . . . unforgettable case histories of men and women afflicted by guilt, or, as he called it, by ââ¬Å"a stain upon the soul.â⬠. . . . His were grave and acute reflections upon the way in which the Puritan mind worked. . . .â⬠(43) Edmund Fuller and B. Jo Kinnick in ââ¬Å"Stories Derived from New England Livingâ⬠state that Hawthorne liked to ââ¬Å"explore uncertainties of belief that trouble a manââ¬â¢s heart and mindâ⬠(31). Clarice Swisher in ââ¬Å"Nathaniel Hawthorne: a Biographyâ⬠states that Hawthorneââ¬â¢s interest tended toward the heart and the psychological effects of these moral and ethical issuesâ⬠(13). A. N. Kaul considers Hawthorne ââ¬Å"preeminently a ââ¬Ëpsychologicalââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ writer ââ¬â ââ¬Å"burrowing, to his utmost ability, into the depths of our common nature, for the purposes of psychological romance. . . . He was deeply preoccupied with the modern themes of alienation, isolation, and guilt consciousness ââ¬â and with modern spiritual problems generallyâ⬠(2). There appears to be more agreement among literary critics regarding the interpretation of Hawthorne as a ââ¬Å"psychologicalâ⬠writer than upon any other aspect of his writi ng. .. ...athaniel Hawthorne, edited by Clarice Swisher. Poisons and their effects Essay
What are poisons and what are their effects? Biologically a poison is any substance that is capable of causing damages, illness and sometimes can lead to death of plants and animals. Poisons affect things when they chemically react with the substance. When poison is introduced in the body it harms the cell metabolism thus rendering it to be non-functional. Some substances are not chemically harmful but when they are taken in excess they have effects like those of poisons. Most poisoning cases are of people who try or commit suicide. It should be known that poisons should not always be looked in negative light, as some of them are very helpful to human beings. Their use depends on their toxicality and the intended work. It is the property of poisons toxicality that makes it to be used for specific functions for example those that are used in farms to control pests, killing weeds and others are applied to preserve building stuff. There are still others that are used by farmers to preserve their harvested foodstuffs such as maize, beans and other grains. Therefore safe in this knowledge, chemicals should not always term as destructive for in other circumstances they are very vital. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã The poison in a chemical is not what makes it to qualify as a poison but rather, it is the chemical or physical properties that make it to qualify. Everybody should be well aware that when poisonous substances are swallowed, inhaled or when it comes to contact with ones skin, they can cause unwanted reaction and this is why they are referred as poison depending on the expected outcome. The reason for saying this is because even some drugs that are prescribed by doctors sometimes could become poisonous if they are not taken as the medical practitioners prescribe them. (Turkington, C. 1999) Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã The most affected of all groups are children. This is because children are very curious to test on every chemical substance they come across especially those who are below the age of six. Most children have itchy hands thus when an adult person is using these chemicals and they happen to be distracted by other things, these children may have access to them. Teenagers are also at risk of being poison victims either knowingly or unknowingly because they like taking risks. Some teenagers also out of curiosity experiment on some poisonous substances like sniffing glue or inhaling other substances. About all teenage cases of poisoning, half of them are regarded as suicide attempts. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Poisons also affect adults either intentionally or unintentionally. These poisons may result from gas leakages; alcohol and other illegal intoxicants and also some household cleaning substances are poisonous. Substances are termed as poisonous depending on their expected. Alcohol is taken for fun but if it is exceeded, then it becomes poisonous and can even kill. There are various symptoms of somebody who has taken poison but these are not always consistent as they vary from one person to another depending on their age, the content and amount taken and the lapsed time since it was taken. The most common symptoms of poisoned victim are: Feeling nausea and vomiting, having cramps, drooling, having pains in the throat, being confused and reduced alertness accompanied with headache. A person may also feel sleepy, experience difficulty in breathing, and they may sustain mouth, eyes, teeth and skin burns. When these symptoms are noted, the victim should immediately be given the necessary first aid and then immediately taken to hospital. (Goldsmith D. 2001). Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã As consumers of chemical products people buy about 0.5 million of potentially poisonous substances either for cleaning, cosmetics, medication, killing weeds. Most of the chemicals that are bought are used for spraying both insects and pests. Almost every American household has about eight poisonous substances. Though pesticides are meant for households, not anyone should be let to access them. This is because most of the children poisoning cases occur due to lack of proper storage of chemicals and negligence. Other accidents occur because the user does not read the instructions properly. It is required that all manufacturers should advise their consumers of how these chemicals should be applied (NSC.org 2005) Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã There are various categories of poisoning and they can be classified as acute poisoning which occurs to a person for a short time, the other one is chronic, this is a continuous and extended poison contamination. Here the victim slowly by slowly develops complications until they later die. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã It can be concluded that chemicals are not poisons but it is the content of the chemical that makes a chemical product to be regarded as poisonous. Even when medical drugs are misused, they could result to deaths.Ã Therefore all chemicals are potentially poisonous. Ã Reference: Goldsmith D. 2001.
